Dr Nancy Buset

Nancy Buset
Dr. Nancy Buset joined our practice right after graduating from optometry school in 2001. She specializes in pediatric optometry and vision therapy, and she’s been with us long enough to watch some of her patients grow from pre-schoolers to college students!

As a participant in the InfantSEE program (www.infantsee.org), a nation-wide network of volunteer optometrists providing free exams for babies, Dr. Nancy has done exams on patients as young as two weeks old. She loves to see kids of any age on her schedule, including those who are “only young at heart.” Dr. Nancy comes from a family of teachers, and educating her patients about their eyes and vision is her favorite part of her job. Healthy Infants At age 8, Dr. Nancy was already significantly near-sighted, and she remembers the amazement of seeing clearly through her first pair of glasses. In high school and college, Dr. Nancy wore contact lenses. As an adult, she had Lasik surgery (www.tlcvision.com for more information) to correct her vision. She loves to help her patients explore the pros and cons of all these options, so they can determine which type of correction will best suit their own lifestyle. Dr. Buset especially enjoys working with students and adults with functional vision problems, such as trouble focusing or aiming their eyes. Vision therapy is like physical therapy for the eyes; it is a powerful tool for resolving many learning-related vision issues, and the results can be very rewarding for both doctor and patient (www.covd.org for more information). Dr. Nancy attended Central College in Pella, Iowa, where she majored in biology and minored in French. Through Central’s study-abroad program, she spent a semester in London, studying Shakespeare, art, and architecture. She also took her first step toward a career in optometry there, working one day a week at an optical shop near Buckingham Palace. As a student at Northeastern State University College of Optometry in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, Dr. Buset was privileged to take part in the campaign to expand optometrists’ scope of practice in that state. After watching the Oklahoma state legislature vote to allow optometrists to perform certain types of laser procedures, she and her classmates put the new law into practice in the optometry college clinic facility, performing advanced techniques that had previously been provided only by ophthalmologists. Another highlight of Dr. Buset’s optometric education was her senior research project on ocular dominance and its impact on certain types of contact lens fittings. Today, she still uses the techniques she and her research partner developed, when fitting contact lenses for patients over age 40 in our practice. As a child growing up in Kansas, Dr. Nancy loved to vacation with her family in the National Parks and Forests, particularly out west. In high school, she spent a summer volunteering for the Student Conservation Association, building new trails in the backcountry of Yellowstone National Park. Her love of the outdoors and her wonder at the majesty of nature are what drew her to Oregon, and she hasn’t been disappointed! She enjoys hiking in the Mt. Hood area. http://www.allaboutvision.com/parents/
